Pretrial release is an Alternative to Incarceration program that is ordered by the courts following court appearances and pending the resolution of a criminal court case. Individuals may be released directly from court with an order to participate in the Pretrial release program.

In addition, the Pretrial Release Program facilitates release for incarcerated individuals who meet appropriate criteria. All eligible defendants, in custody at the Ulster County Jail, who have bail set by a court are given the opportunity to be interviewed for this program. A Probation Assistant or Probation Officer conducts an initial screening and personal interview with the defendants. A recommendation is made to the court regarding release status. The options include: Release on Recognizance (ROR), or Release under Supervision (RUS) to the Probation Department with options of Electronic Monitoring as a condition of release if appropriate.

Pretrial staff provides reminders of court appearances. Referrals for community-based programs and supports are made as needed.

Fees for Services: None
